fracture sans typeface

For this original typeface design, I wanted to take a typical sans serif typeface and push the limits of legibility by removing pieces of letters. Rather than having a clear sense of each letter, the reader must pay close attention to the context in which the letters appear, putting together words like a puzzle. The mood of this typeface is mysterious and futuristic, and recalls the age of the early modern avant garde, particularly the Bahaus and Soviet Constructivists. The booklet shown below documents the entire process of creating the font, from the moment of inspiration, through the preliminary drawings,  to the actual application of the font in layouts and sample text copy.

LIGHTCATCHER TRIVET

Using laser cutting technology, Lightcatcher Trivet was fabricated in the Sullivan Fabrication Studios at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A fully functional kitchen trivet, Lightcatcher is an ideal accessory for the contemporary dining room.

HOUSEFIRE

HOUSEFIRE is an experimental art object that draws inspiration from contemporary lighting design. Using laser engraving and traditional woodworking technologies, HOUSEFIRE negotiates the relationship between a functional object, and a sculpture. The title "HOUSEFIRE" references the warm, fiery glow that is contained by the four "walls" of the box.
